Assertive Community Treatment

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is one of the oldest and most widely researched evidence-based practices for behavioral health. The model is person-centered and recovery-based, with a transdisciplinary team providing all needed behavioral health services to those with severe and persistent mental illness.

Services provided by ACT include case management, nursing, psychiatry, employment, substance use disorder services, peer support, and more. These services are provided in the homes or communities of those being served. Assertive Community Treatment teams have a low client to staff ratio and are available to clients 24/7.

The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion estimates that approximately 1 in 25 Americans live with a serious mental illness. The State of Maryland has approximately 25 Assertive Community Treatment teams.1

The Evidence-Based Practice Center at University of Maryland, Baltimore provides state-wide ACT events and training, as well as individual consultation for teams. For more information, contact Katie Kirk, ACT Trainer, at: kkirk@som.umaryland.edu.
